Scotland and Northern Ireland Research

The population of Scotland and Northern Ireland today is less than 7 million combined. Yet, the number of people worldwide with an ancestry from those areas is estimated between 70-90 million. Chances are you or someone’s genealogy that you are working on has roots from there.

This presentation will provide information to assist in Scottish genealogy research.

Mark McLaren

Originally from the Philadelphia area, Mark graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder with a B.S. degree in Business. He is retired from a career in the Medical Supply Distribution business where he held a number of executive level positions. His interest in genealogy began in the early 2000s and has expanded over the years. His current areas of focus are genetic genealogy and Scottish research. He is currently a member of the National Genealogical Society, California Genealogical Society (CGS), Oregon Genealogical Forum, and the San Ramon Valley Genealogical Society (SRVGS).

Genealogy help available on Mondays from Noon to 4:00 PM in the Special Collections Room at the Stanislaus County Library (1500 I Street, Modesto, CA).

Whether you are a beginner and need help getting started or have hit a brick wall in your research come see us. We have a great selection of genealogy materials with volunteers to help you. The library also has free wifi. Come check us out! Publications has the complete holdings Index.

  • To bring together people with mutual interest in genealogical research.
  • To inform, instruct, and educate members in the techniques of genealogical research.
  • To increase the genealogical holdings of the Special Collections Room at the Stanislaus County Free Public Library and acquire other materials for community use in the form of reference books, microfiche and microfilms.

Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month 7:00 P.M.
(excepting July & December).
Programs: Educational talks by persons recognized as having expertise in the genealogical and associated fields.
Workshops &
Seminars:		 "How-to" classes, demonstrations, help for beginners, intermediate and advanced researchers.
Newsletter: Filled with information on how-to and where-to research, current events and in-depth articles pertaining to research.
Free Queries: Limited to information obtained within the Special Collections Room located in our Stanislaus County Library, Modesto branch. Offered to members and non-members.
Surname Registry: Pedigree charts submitted by members are indexed.
Interest Groups: These meetings are held separately from the regular membership meetings.
Research Trips: At least one day-long trip to National Archives and Sutro Library in the SF Bay Area, and one week-long trip to Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

It has over 200 recipes. There are also quite a few pictures of our members own dishes. The recipes represent both internation, our members' heritage, and American dishes. Many of them are extracted from the memory of Moms and Grandmas among our members. Some are truly historic and are marked as such, while others represent past and future trends, like our Root Cellar section.
